USA Tour on a Harley-Davidson

In June 2010, Gary France will be starting a 4 to 5 month, 13,800 mile tour of the USA on his Harley-Davidson motorcycle. At the moment, he is in the planning stage and this blog gives details of how the planning is going. Later, when he is on the tour, it will be updated daily.

Gary said, “I am planning this 13,800 mile tour across the USA from my home just north of London in the UK. I have two Harley-Davidsons motorcycles and I am fortunate that I am able to retire early (part-time at least), put away my business suits and then do some of the things I have wanted to do for years!”

Keep an eye on his blog and enjoy the journey with him.  He is also asking for your opinion on lots of subjects.  Get in there and contribute.

Bikers bring Christmas joy

BY MICHAEL INMAN (Canberra Times)

THE SIGHT of bikers roaring into Civic might, under other circumstances, send parents and children scurrying.

But yesterday the region's motorcycle riders showed their softer sides as they donated money and toys to St John's Care and the Salvation Army at the Canberra Motorcyclists' Toy Run. The 28th annual run was the largest ever, attracting more than 1000 bikers from about 10 ACT clubs, including the Ulysses Club and the Vietnam Veterans Motorcycle Club.

The whiskered, leather-clad bikers donned red Santa caps and opened their wallets to raise more than $6500 for St John's Care, while the Salvation Army was inundated with hundreds of toys to ease the burden on battling families.

3 Kings day 06-01-09

DSCF3202 21 Goldwings met at Goldwings Alicante on the 6th of Jan, we rode about 7ks to meet up with the vintage car club for breakfast, and a very nice breakfast it was, the meeting place was in a yard belonging to the brother of one of our group, there were many beautiful vehicles on display from a vintage American fire engine to a very nice TR3, following the fantastic breakfast all the 21 wings and about DSCF3219the same number of cars and trucks set off around the area to gather in the village square for the 3 kings to give all the village children their presents, a very nice typical Spanish morning out.

What day is it LOL??

When I got the email from Lol about the concentration last weekend I thought that would be a nice relaxing few hours, not long distance, nice scenery and I hadn't seen the lads from TnT for some time. I set off for the 30mins trip to Castalla. I arrived early as usual for a coffee and tostada. Checking my phone I noticed a missed call from Lol, I rang him and he informed me that he had done his back and couldn't make the run out. He asked if I would mind taking his good lady Liz as she like me was looking forward to the ride out, normally I would have refused as I don't like taking passengers who have not ridden with me before. Lol has done me a lot of favours over the years and to pay him back and not to let Liz down I agreed.

image We enjoyed a nice ride out and Liz turned out to be a great passenger and enjoyed the music and comfort of the Wing. We arrived in the village (Fontanar I think) rode around the village, there was a few bikes around the local area and parked outside bars, we then rode around the village looking for the parking area. Diego who was leading stopped, and asked for directions and we followed him back into the centre of the village. I noticed the trees were decked out with flags and a band was gathering on a street corner. Wow, they really put some effort into this for a bike day I thought. Lucy then came over to the bike and informed Liz and I that the concentration was on Saturday not Sunday and the bikes parked around were the campers and were having breakfast before leaving the village. I cannot print my thoughts as I would be locked up.

Well Lol that's what I call great planning and organisation. I noticed on the blog, a write up from Lol about the trip he had to show people houses, well they must be counting their blessings that he managed to get the date right. I even noticed sometime ago a trip to Morocco, thank God I didn't book in for that one, who knows when we would have got back. So a word of warning next time you get an email inviting you on a trip with Lol, double check and check again.

I cannot post any pictures because, as normal I forgot the camera, BUT if I had taken it it would have ended up where the sun don't shine, if you get my drift. Second word of warning if you intend going to Alqueña for the racing it is on SUNDAY, that's the day between Saturday and Monday LOL.

Diary of a Goldwinger Part 7 - Yecla 2008

by Steve

15 Goldwings met at the Plaza de Torros in Yecla on the Saturday of the towns fiesta, we rode all of 500 meters to a bar for the usual breakfast, during the hour and a half breakfast another 8 turned up. There were a few who Lorna and I had not met before and we were quickly introduced to them all.

DSCF2686 All of the riders present came from the Alicante region, I learned that there approx 60 members of the Goldwing España Cub in the Alicante region.

Lets hope they all turn up one day as that would be a lovely sight.

We were joined by a member of the Policia Local on a BMW and we set off for a ride around the town with lights and sirens blaring out, and that was on the wings.

After a ride around the very busy streets of Yecla we arrived at our hotel, the ones who were staying got booked in and we then rode to a large roundabout in the town and duly parked on it, as normal we were then swamped by members of the public to admire the bikes.

After a browse around the medieval market we rode down to the bus station where 46 of us sat down and had a fantastic meal, only in Spain could that many people sit outside a bus station and be fed a great meal.

DSCF2685 After a couple of hours we rode up into the town centre and parked the bikes up for then night. We then walked around the streets for a few beers and to watch the floats in the Carnival, and what a sight there must have been 40 of them, all made from hand made paper flowers, it must have took them hours.

We visited many bars over the next few hours and the whole town was in party mood with garages opened up as bars and the wine was flowing.

Around 10 o'clock (I think) we made our way to another restaurant and once again ate for a couple of hours.

Then it was back into the throng of party goers for a few more beers before retiring back to the hotel at around 3am.

Another great weekend with great friendly like minded people, in a very nice hotel and enjoying the Spanish way of life. I even remembered the camera only to find after 2 photos the batteries were flat, we couldn't find a shop open so that's the only record of a great weekend. Our European trips start next month when, on the 12th we are in Lloret de Mar for the Spanish Treffen, then off to Wels in Austria for the Austrian Treffen at the end of June.

Ride safe and be lucky, Steve.

Hotel El Mirador - Sierra de Gúdar

image Hotel Rural El Mirador

Gudar is a fantastic place for bikers according to Steve who writes the, very, occasional Diary of a Goldwinger.  So if you're looking for a place to go with your club or a group of friends then this looks reasonable.

Try Moterus - Bikers Social Network

moterus

Everybody who is anybody, and probably has no real mates,  goes on about social networks like facebook, linkedin, and the many other varieties that exist here on t'internet and joking apart they do seem to be great places for 'networkers'.

Well here is moterus a social network for bikers based in Spain.  Yes I know it's in Spanish but with a little bit of perseverance and the liberal use of Google Translator.  You can find other bikers, set up or join groups, set up or search for routes with a really simple route planner and post up your events or look at what's on.

Give it a try.  If you like it we might be able to persuade them to do an English version.

Great Sunday Morning - 13-04-2008

What a way to spend a Sunday morning in sunny Spain - 16 motorbikes of all shapes and sizes, ridden by 16 motorbikers of all shapes and sizes, heading off for a moto almuerza (motorcyclists breakfast) in Vallada - does it get much better?

The Tour and Track Club is now part of MotoClub La Foia and there is a great mix of people, both Spanish and 'extranjeros'.  While we set of on this route another group of about the same size set off for another moto almuerza en Vila Joyosa.

The route we took to Vallada involved plenty of twisty mountain roads and other opportunities to open the throttle on Autovias.  From the Bar Argentina in Castalla we went past Onil and over the mountains to Banyeres de Mariola, then on to Ontinyent and Vallada.  The road on the map below was a beautiful run between Ontinyent and Vallada.  Make sure you don't get vertigo as the roads don't have crash barriers - makes a change, hey?

The route back was through Jijona by way of Alcoy and the 'Carrasqueta' and then the mountain road from Jijona to Tibi and on to Castalla.

A great mornings ride getting back in time to see the MotoGP.

Day of Champions tickets to go on sale - 31-03-08

http://www.riders.org/doc/default.aspx

image Riders is pleased to announce that tickets for Day of Champions 2008 will be going on sale on Monday 31st March 2008 at 9am.

Our biggest annual fundraising event will take place on Thursday 19th June, before the British MotoGP at Donington Park – and we wanted you to be among the first to know when tickets are going on sale.

This year we are giving you the chance to buy tickets 24 hours a day through the online shop on our re-launched website www.riders.org. Those that don’t want to buy online can call the Day of Champions ticket-line on 08702 242 960 from 9am on Monday 31st March. The ticket-line will be open from 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday.

Prices for Day of Champions 2008 will be the same as 2007 – Tickets for the paddock and pit-lane are £25 and ride-in tickets are priced at £50 each. For full details of ticket prices for 2008, click here.

Once again, fans will be able to see behind the scenes of MotoGP as the teams give up their time and open up the paddock to lucky ticket holders. As always there will also be lots of events taking place on the infield and around the track.

Former British Superbike Champion, Niall Mackenzie, has confirmed that he will be leading the traditional ride-in to Donington Park. This year the ride-in meets at Mallory Park, before completing two laps of the track. Participants then head to the Victoria pub in Coalville, where they will enjoy breakfast before heading to Donington. It concludes with hundreds of bikers taking to the tarmac for two parade laps of the famous track.

As ever, the climax to the day will be the famous live auction, with appearances from the MotoGP riders. In 2007 a set of five paintings charting Valentino Rossi’s career raised £6,000 and a signed helmet belonging to world champion, Casey Stoner, sold for £2,000. This year British star, James Toseland, will make his first appearance at a Day of Champions auction as a MotoGP rider.

We will keep you up to date with all the latest news and information in the run up to Day of Champions, and you can also visit the Day of Champions website by clicking here.

Riders would like to thank everyone at Dorna and IRTA for making Day of Champions possible. We would also like to thank all the teams, riders, and everyone else in the paddock for giving up so much of their valuable time to help raise money for our work.
