Bikers bring Christmas joy

THE SIGHT of bikers roaring into Civic might, under other circumstances, send parents and children scurrying.

But yesterday the region's motorcycle riders showed their softer sides as they donated money and toys to St John's Care and the Salvation Army at the Canberra Motorcyclists' Toy Run. The 28th annual run was the largest ever, attracting more than 1000 bikers from about 10 ACT clubs, including the Ulysses Club and the Vietnam Veterans Motorcycle Club.

The whiskered, leather-clad bikers donned red Santa caps and opened their wallets to raise more than $6500 for St John's Care, while the Salvation Army was inundated with hundreds of toys to ease the burden on battling families.

Diary of a Goldwinger , Part 11

Caminha, Northen Portugal was the venue for the 2009 Goldwing Club of Portugal Treffen.

1017 ks from home according to the sat-nav on the bike. Having never been to a Portugese Treffen we decided to give it a go. Having heard several stories about it we booked in for the camping and all the meals. This is the only Treffen that caters for you if you want it.

We set off with the trailer in tow and headed for Madrid expecting a 10 hour trip. I have noticed that since the credit crunch or crisis as they call it here, the roads are a lot quieter now. We had a quiet trip and as we hit the 700ks we noticed a big drop in the temperature and the clouds were getting very black, it started to rain and the temp went down and down before hitting 8 degrees. We rode through a few showers and arrived at the camp site after an 11 hour journey.

The camp site was OK, looking a bit on the tired side but we soon found our pitch and put the tent up amongst the many wingers that were on site. That all sorted it was a quick shower and down to the bar. A very small bar but anything will do after the trip. We chatted to the wingers that were there,from many different countries. Had a meal and retired to bed.

Up and about the next morning was the plan, into the town of Caminha for coffee and toast and a walk around. What a lovely little town it was, very colourfull in the main square with its many cafes and shops. The weather was not very good but we had a good walk around,found the local super market, stocked up and made our way back to the site, parked the bike and walked the short distance to the beach, sat down ordered a coffee and within 5 mins we were hit by rain and boy did it rain, this turned out to be the pattern for the whole weekend, heavy showers and sunshine. Friday night was into a marquee on the local football pitch, a 200 metre walk away for a typical Portuguese meal, roast pork and rice with salad. A few beers,in fact quite a few beers, a stagger back to the tent and a good nights sleep.

Heavy rain fell during the night and it was still raining when we got up. During a bright spell we got on the bike and headed back into Spain to a town called Pontevedra, a big town with lots of shops (bad choice) after a bit of lunch it was back on the bike and headed for Caminha. Petrol is 24 cents per litre more expensive in Portugal so we filled up before the border. We also took note of all the overhead gantry's displaying that there was a campaign on about speeding motorcyclists in the area and saw a few unmarked Guardia civil cars on our way back. Saturday night was presentation night and we were all transported by coach to a local town to a very nice hotel for a very nice meal. There were 17 countries represented at the Treffen, France took the top spot, Spain came in 3rd ( I think ) A great night and we got back to site about 1 am. Sunday again was a wet day and we rode into the town for the parade of nations. A manic 20 min trip around Caminha, lots of locals out on the streets to see the bikes as normal. Back to the marquee for another meal of Portuguese food, a few beers and off to bed.

Monday morning at 2am we were hit by a severe thunder storm, heavy rain and wind saw us both holding on to the tent and we were lucky not get blown away, some tents did on site and a large branch came off a tree onto a camper, luckily nobody was injured but a very rough night to say the least. At 6 am during a lull in the weather we packed our soggy belongings into the trailer and set off for home. Torrential rain for 3 hours on the way, forcing us to pull over at one stage, the rain stopped and we encountered 80 /90 kilometre winds for the next 4 hours, very poor riding conditions but we carried on and it took us 14 hours to do the 1000 + kms home.

Despite the weather we both enjoyed our first Portuguese Treffen and found the people friendly and really enjoyed their company and their food. Next year is still on the coast but further down the south of Portugal, we will be booking in for that one. 202 bikes inscribed for the weekend and the Portuguese club were pleased with that number. Not a big Treffen but a good one.

Next week sees us at the Spanish Treffen in Lloret de Mar. So watch this space …

If you can remember that far back, this event is on the way back from the Alcala del Jucar run a year or so ago. Not far from my place and just a couple of villages down the road from where the Buell ran out of petrol. Ayora is the place and the date is the 10,11 and 12th of July, so plenty of time to get yourself across for the weekend!!!!

3 Kings day 06-01-09

21 Goldwings met at Goldwings Alicante on the 6th of Jan, we rode about 7ks to meet up with the vintage car club for breakfast, and a very nice breakfast it was, the meeting place was in a yard belonging to the brother of one of our group, there were many beautiful vehicles on display from a vintage American fire engine to a very nice TR3, following the fantastic breakfast all the 21 wings and about the same number of cars and trucks set off around the area to gather in the village square for the 3 kings to give all the village children their presents, a very nice typical Spanish morning out.

What day is it LOL??

When I got the email from Lol about the concentration last weekend I thought that would be a nice relaxing few hours, not long distance, nice scenery and I hadn't seen the lads from TnT for some time. I set off for the 30mins trip to Castalla. I arrived early as usual for a coffee and tostada. Checking my phone I noticed a missed call from Lol, I rang him and he informed me that he had done his back and couldn't make the run out. He asked if I would mind taking his good lady Liz as she like me was looking forward to the ride out, normally I would have refused as I don't like taking passengers who have not ridden with me before. Lol has done me a lot of favours over the years and to pay him back and not to let Liz down I agreed.

We enjoyed a nice ride out and Liz turned out to be a great passenger and enjoyed the music and comfort of the Wing. We arrived in the village (Fontanar I think) rode around the village, there was a few bikes around the local area and parked outside bars, we then rode around the village looking for the parking area. Diego who was leading stopped, and asked for directions and we followed him back into the centre of the village. I noticed the trees were decked out with flags and a band was gathering on a street corner. Wow, they really put some effort into this for a bike day I thought. Lucy then came over to the bike and informed Liz and I that the concentration was on Saturday not Sunday and the bikes parked around were the campers and were having breakfast before leaving the village. I cannot print my thoughts as I would be locked up.

Well Lol that's what I call great planning and organisation. I noticed on the blog, a write up from Lol about the trip he had to show people houses, well they must be counting their blessings that he managed to get the date right. I even noticed sometime ago a trip to Morocco, thank God I didn't book in for that one, who knows when we would have got back. So a word of warning next time you get an email inviting you on a trip with Lol, double check and check again.

I cannot post any pictures because, as normal I forgot the camera, BUT if I had taken it it would have ended up where the sun don't shine, if you get my drift. Second word of warning if you intend going to Alqueña for the racing it is on SUNDAY, that's the day between Saturday and Monday LOL.

Diary of a Goldwinger Part 8 - Spain 2008

June the 10th saw Lorna and I setting off to Lloret De Mar to attend the 15th Anniversary Treffen with the GWAE, just a short trip of approx 6 hrs.

Because the weather had been so bad here we decided not take the trailer and camping kit, we booked a mobile home at the camping site.

The trip up saw us hitting very heavy rain around Valencia and caused us to pull over for a coffee to give it a chance to ease off.

Due to the lorry drivers strike the motorway was very quiet and because of the lack of lorries we did not get the spray that you normally get from the trucks.

We had arranged to meet our friends from England, Tony and Helen and their daughter Holly, they ride an 1800 outfit, in yellow it really is a beauty, with music , DVD and a microphone in the sidecar to keep holly amused on the long trip from Yorkshire.

We arrived on the campsite, booked in and were shown to our mobile, we then booked out due to the state of the place, it was disgusting and completely bare, you were supposed to hire everything from the campsite shop. Tony, Helen and Holly had arrived, they had booked a log cabin, they to booked out of their shed, as they called it, we then contacted Malc and Carol who had travelled down with Tony, Helen and Holly and were staying in a hotel just 5 minutes from the campsite, checked if the hotel had rooms, the end result being 6 nights in a very nice hotel for us all.

On the Thursday we rode down to the Treffen and inscribed, there was a lot of unhappy people there due to the state of the accommodation, the camping area was ok and a few tents were up or being erected.

Friday was the parade of nations , an area on the sea front had been dedicated as a Goldwing area with disco ect, as the 200ish goldwings left the campsite it started to rain and within 5 mins we were completely soaked, we rode down through the town and then straight back to the hotel to dry off, it was a bloody shame as the area was very nice right on the beach and would have been a perfect setting.

Saturday night was awards night, 17 countries were represented at the Treffen, GB won the attendance award with 32 bikes, furthest distance went to a rider from Sweden, numerous awards were handed out , 215 bikes attended, a beautiful white 1800 from Russia won the light show, see attached photo.

What a fantastic machine to see it fully lit up at night was unbelievable, like it not it must have taken hours and hours and is one of the best we have seen. We met up with some old friends over the week and enjoyed some great company, we did the beach thing with Holly and she, as always kept us amused, we went to a local marine world park and had a great day out.

All in all, another great time with some great people and some great bikes, I have heard that a new two litre is planned for September, so watch this space, ride safe and enjoy,
