Bayliss Wins 20th Superbikes Superpole at Assen

Watch Live Superbikes

Troy Bayliss powered to his second Superpole of the year at Assen and his 20th in career with a time of 1'38.428, just a fraction slower than the new best lap he had previously set in the final minutes of free practice.

Second place on the grid went to Valencia winner Noriyuki Haga (Yamaha Motor Italia WSB), just a tenth away from Bayliss's pace, with Sterilgarda Go Eleven Ducati's Ruben Xaus right behind in third. The Spanish rider had been a lowly seventeenth in Friday qualifying, but was able to make major gains today and should also be a contender for victory in tomorrow's two 22-lap races.

"It's the first time here for us on the new 1098" said Bayliss. "We had a pretty good base setting, we've been working towards a better set-up and we've achieved that. I was really surprised with the 38.3 time I did in free practice, so I thought maybe it was possible to do a flat 38 or high 37. It wasn't to be but it was just enough to give me the pole and this is a great position to start tomorrow. Regarding my bicycle injury, there are always some niggling problems that you have being a motorcycle racer, it's not very often that you are fully fit but I'm feeling OK and there are no problems at all."

World Motorcyle Calendar

World Motorcycle Calendar

image So I was looking at all this social networking stuff and came across eventful and thought it might be a good idea for motorcyclists across the world to share their events in one place so we don't have to go search every nook and cranny to find current motorcycling events.  Here's an attempt to do just that.

  • You can ad your events in as much or as little detail as you like.
  • You can put the World Motorcycle Widget on your blog or web to show up and coming events.
  • You can add events to your Yahoo, Google, Outlook, iCal calendars.

Have a look and see what you think.  Leave a comment if you like it or not or if you know of a better way of doing it.

Try Moterus - Bikers Social Network

moterus

Everybody who is anybody, and probably has no real mates,  goes on about social networks like facebook, linkedin, and the many other varieties that exist here on t'internet and joking apart they do seem to be great places for 'networkers'.

Well here is moterus a social network for bikers based in Spain.  Yes I know it's in Spanish but with a little bit of perseverance and the liberal use of Google Translator.  You can find other bikers, set up or join groups, set up or search for routes with a really simple route planner and post up your events or look at what's on.

Give it a try.  If you like it we might be able to persuade them to do an English version.

World Superbikes Assen - 27-04-08

The classic Dutch TT circuit at Assen plays host to the fourth round of the HANNspree FIM Superbike World Championship this weekend, after a gap of three weeks from the Spanish Round.

With two second places at Valencia, Troy Bayliss (Ducati Xerox) increased his lead over his closest rivals to 48 points but the Australian is now coming under threat from a number of adversaries, mainly on four-cylinder machines.  Second place in the championship is still in the hands of Spain's Fonsi Nieto, but the Alstare Suzuki rider has not had another result to match his Losail win and is coming under pressure from third and fourth placed men, Troy Corser (Yamaha Motor Italia WSB) and Checa, both equal on 72 points.

Philippaerts takes first podium in rain-hit Spanish MX-GP

David Philippaerts finished as runner-up and gained his first podium result with the YZ450FM, giving the Yamaha Monster Motocross Team their maiden silverware of the FIM 2008 World Championship, after just one moto in a torrid and swampy Grand Prix of Spain at a soaked Bellpuig.

Almost eleven hours of rain from the early hours of Sunday morning through to the close of the afternoon rendered the hillside circuit almost un-passable and the second MX1 moto was cancelled as the heaviest period of water lashed the sea of mud.

The track had already been cut after numerous MX2 machines could not make the three steep step-ups only 20 minutes prior but the majority of MX1-GP riders were concerned about the conditions and the second sprint was eventually annulled leaving the results from the first race to decide the overall result.

Josh Coppins was fourth through the slime and seat-high ruts in Moto1 and ensured that the team had their two riders within the top four in perhaps the hardest race conditions seen this century.
It was all a stark contrast to the blue skies and sunshine of Saturday that saw the track, hard, dusty and fast with the top nine qualifiers split by just two seconds. With the drastic change in weather came a different race approach as the slow speed and care used by the riders turned the race into an exercise of survival and in which the wild alterations in the lap-chart, as people slipped and crashed throughout the 15 laps, was confusing to follow. Lap-times almost doubled.

Philippaerts rode particularly well after becoming involved in a first corner crash with several others. The Italian soldiered on to move up the standings. He should have been joined in the top three by Coppins who was holding a steady second place behind leader and eventual winner Steve Ramon. The New Zealander however could not avoid two stationary riders on the step-ups and the needed time to remount and restart after his slip.
With one just moto completed in extraordinary circumstances the world championship standings show that Philippaerts lies third, 15 points from the lead while Coppins is fourth, just 8 behind his team-mate.

Round three will take place at Agueda in Portugal next week.

Prumm to take on Dutch championship round

image Double FIM Women’s World Cup winner and new Van Beers Yamaha rider Katherine Prumm will attempt to make a small piece of history in three weeks time when she strives to become the first female to qualify and participate in the Jumbo Dutch Motocross championship. The New Zealander, who has been based in the Netherlands since mid-March in preparation for her assault with the YZ250F on the first ever Women’s World Championship this year, is aiming to pit herself against Holland’s best, and no-doubt a selection of Grand Prix racers, at the third round of the series at Rhenen on May 1st.

The 19 year old has been adapting to life in Europe over the past month after sharing an apartment – organised by the team – with fellow Van Beers racer Evgeny Bobryshev. After completing tests in Italy and also through the French sand of Dunkirk in recent weeks Prumm is now searching for events to sharpen her race speed in the build-up to the first GP of five in the world championship that takes place at the impressive Sevlievo circuit in Bulgaria on May 11th.

“I have been in Europe for quite a while now and we are just looking for some races to contest before going to Bulgaria,” she commented. “Rhenen will be a big challenge and something I am really looking forward to.”
“I am not daunted by the track but obviously the level of competition is going to be very high and there will also be some of the top guys from the world championship in there also,” she added “to qualify would be an achievement and I will certainly try my best.”

“My time here has been good and beneficial. I have been doing a lot of training and getting the bike set-up. I went to the first Grand Prix at Valkenswaard and generally things have been going OK, even though the apartment is a bit empty at the moment because my team-mate has gone back to Russia for the week!”

The Spaniard now has three wins in as many years in Portugal, having also crossed the line first in the 2006 125cc race. He now climbs his way back up the quarter litre standings, following disappointment in Qatar and Jerez.

Nina Prinz takes impressive win at Misano on YZF-R1

image During the first round of the European Championship Road Racing Women’s 1000cc held at Misano Adriatico (Italy) last weekend, Nina Prinz (Team Yamaha Motor Germany) debuted on the R1 and took it to an impressive victory. The reigning European champion, from Mannheim/Leutkirch in Germany, had been consistently fast during all qualifying sessions and dominated throughout the weekend, even during qualifying where she competed against many men from the open class.

Starting from pole-position in the Women’s round, Nina led the entire race lapping a considerable three seconds per laps faster than her rivals, some on 1000ccc machinery other on 600cc. Over the race distance of 10 laps she managed to create a comfortable 32 second gap and thus take victory with relative ease. Susie Grayson from Great Britain finished 3rd aboard her YZF-R1.

With the first round completed in the women’s championship the team looks forward with confidence towards the remaining two rounds, the next being held in Assen (the Netherlands) on the 15th of June. A secondary championship that the team attends with riders; Jorg Teuchert, Andrzej Pawalec and Nina Prinz, is the German Superbike Championship (IDM) starting in two weeks time at the Lausitzring. Nina will be competing among 58 other (male) riders in a very competitive field.

With the official support of the promising Nina Prinz, Yamaha is aiming to increase the popularity of female motorcycle riding and racing.

Nina Prinz
“This first race was really perfect! The bike worked great and we had no problems at all during any of the sessions. In qualifying it was quite difficult to put in a fast lap as it was busy on the track with 36 riders, of which only 10 were reasonably competitive. It was a nice experience to be the fastest one out there, even faster than the men in the open class. The woman’s championship is nice but the real challenge for me will be the IDM. I think I will be able to learn a lot there. I hope to score some points in IDM but it for sure will not be easy.”

Great Sunday Morning - 13-04-2008

What a way to spend a Sunday morning in sunny Spain - 16 motorbikes of all shapes and sizes, ridden by 16 motorbikers of all shapes and sizes, heading off for a moto almuerza (motorcyclists breakfast) in Vallada - does it get much better?

The Tour and Track Club is now part of MotoClub La Foia and there is a great mix of people, both Spanish and 'extranjeros'.  While we set of on this route another group of about the same size set off for another moto almuerza en Vila Joyosa.

The route we took to Vallada involved plenty of twisty mountain roads and other opportunities to open the throttle on Autovias.  From the Bar Argentina in Castalla we went past Onil and over the mountains to Banyeres de Mariola, then on to Ontinyent and Vallada.  The road on the map below was a beautiful run between Ontinyent and Vallada.  Make sure you don't get vertigo as the roads don't have crash barriers - makes a change, hey?

The route back was through Jijona by way of Alcoy and the 'Carrasqueta' and then the mountain road from Jijona to Tibi and on to Castalla.

A great mornings ride getting back in time to see the MotoGP.

Toseland rues cautious start

By Matt Beer

James Toseland, Tech 3 Yamaha, Portuguese MotoGPJames Toseland believes he cost himself a better result at Estoril by being too tentative in the damp opening laps. A brief rain shower made the track treacherous in the early stages of the race, and Toseland fell from sixth on the grid to 10th, before regrouping to take seventh by the chequered flag. "I had rain spots on the visor, and just with my lack of experience I didn't realise how much you could push in those conditions," he told BBC television.

Spanish One, Two - Estoril MotoGP 2008

Jorge Lorenzo came in a comfortable first ahead of Dani Pedrosa and Valentino Rossi.  After taking 3 Pole Positions from the first three races of the season Jorge Lorenzo has taken a well deserved victory in Portugal.  What gave him the victory?  Was it his decision to wear his red practice helmet instead of the gold race helmet?  Was it the Michelin tyres over the Bridgestones?  Was it his animosity with Pedrosa?

It may be a combination of many things but the main reasons are that he is an aggressive and skilled rider and is showing that he is not prepared to be the Rookie in preparation to win future races - he wants to win now!

It's interesting to see that the first three on the grid started and finished in the same positions.

Pedrosa carries form to Estoril. - Yahoo! Eurosport UK

Pedrosa carries form to Estoril. Fri 11 Apr, 03:25 PM Jerez winner and MotoGP World Championship leader Dani Pedrosa emerged on top of an unpredictable opening day at Estoril, venue for this weekend's Portuguese Grand Prix.

This morning's first free practice had taken place on a track still partially wet from overnight rain and saw a spectacular highside for Valentino Rossi. The Italian was unharmed and went on to finish the session in second place, some 0.699secs behind world champion Casey Stoner, as Bridgestone riders took the top five positions.

With lap times over ten seconds off the ultimate pace, and track conditions continuing to improve, the first session times were rendered irrelevant as the afternoon hour began in fully dry - if blustery - conditions. But the Estoril circuit soon proved itself to be a threat wet or dry, with Stoner falling on his out lap, after losing the front on the exit of the ultra-tight chicane, James Toseland suffering a similar incident and fellow rookie Alex de Angelis being flicked off at much higher speed. Pedrosa, only 16th this morning, put his Repsol Honda on top just before the half way stage of the afternoon session - and returned to P1 in the final minute, after having been replaced at the top by Colin Edwards and then fellow M1 rider Rossi.

I've got to say I'm quite impressed with it.  the site has a more human 2008 motogp.com beta version now onlinefeel to it and I like the Live Timing on the front page.

There are some free videos and Toseland is impressive on the piano.  Click on the picture to go to the videos page.

What do you think about it?  Take a look and then come back and leave your comments here.

The other thing that has been launched in the MotoGP Impact, a sort of Skype type communicator.  My first impression of it is that it's a great idea but needs to be more user friendly.
